New Year's Resolutions (that are fun!)

About 45% of U.S. adults will make a New Year’s resolution for 2011. If you’re one of those people, you should also resolve to use your library in the New Year to help you reach your goals. Whatever your resolution may be, I’d be willing to bet we have at least one resource to inspire, empower, and inform you on the path to your objective!

According to a 2002 study from the University of Scranton, three of the most popular New Year’s resolutions are (not surprisingly) related to weight loss, exercise, and smoking cessation. Those certainly are worthwhile resolutions, but they’re just not very fun. Here are 10 resolution ideas (and 20 related resources) that we hope might inspire people (even non-resolvers!). Nobody ever said New Year’s resolutions have to be painful.

1. Richmonders, you live in a very cool city. We have history and culture galore. Get out and enjoy it in 2011! Make a resolution to visit local attractions you haven’t seen before—a new attraction each month. Get a guide book, and you’ll be surprised by all the extraordinary things around this city you haven’t yet seen.

2. There has been a lot of discussion recently about the importance of buying local. It's healthier, better for the local economy, and better for the environment. Plus, it's fun! Meet neighbors, find out where your food comes from, and find a new sense of community. We have all kinds of resources that will help you keep your purchasing in Richmond in 2011.  Local publications in our periodicals department let you know where to go to get what you need.

3. Maybe learning a new craft could help enrich your life in the new year. You could start making next year's holiday gifts!

4. If exercise was already on your mind for 2011, maybe we can help spice up the old gym routine. How about learning to Salsa? Or for the very brave, maybe rock climbing?

5. To offset all that exercise (oops), master a new cuisine. If you eat in restaurants a lot, you'll be saving money by cooking at home. Plus, you'll be able to impress all your friends and family.

6. Okay, maybe saving and planning for retirement isn't that much fun. But, in general, being retired is fun! It's never too early (or too late) to start thinking about it. Resolve to think about retirement in 2011, to get your 401(k) in order or just to start putting money aside.

7. Here's our favorite resolution possibility: Travel. Take a vacation. Do your research. Go somewhere amazing.

8. If you're thinking about starting a business, 2011 is the year for it! And your library is the place to start. We have lots of information for potential entrepreneurs that will help demystify the process so you can get your business up and running.

9. Resolve to complete a home improvement project. Finish the basement. Build a deck. Paint the walls. Or remodel the kitchen. Warning: this may or may not actually be fun.

10. Play a musical instrument. Whether you've never played before or you just haven't touched your trombone since high school, try playing an instrument this year. It's good for your brain.

Okay, now it's time for you to get to the library and start resolving! Happy New Year from all of us at Richmond Public Library. We are so looking forward to helping you with your information needs in 2011.
